Manufacturer Leroy
110,00 €
This design was made by Manufacturer Leroy around 1960. It was first made as a decor in grisaille, which got enhanced with color at a later stage, and represented lush vegetation, ships at anchor, and a few characters. Based on the frigates in the bay and the Louis Philippe costumes worn by the characters, the scene can be dated to the 19th century.
This panoramic wallpaper comes from a private collection. We have restored it to give it back some contrast while retaining the spirit of its original pale colors. We have also removed the characters to give it a more contemporary feel.

The Leroy workshop was founded in 1842 at 59 rue La Fayette in Paris. It is known for its technical innovations and the sophistication of the patterns used for printing wallpapers. At the end of the 19th century, it was the largest wallpaper factory in Paris and the biggest employer in the 11th arrondissement. It helped to bring the manufacture of wallpaper into the industrial era, thanks to the mechanization of printing processes, thus making a luxurious product accessible to the masses. In 1912, the factory was transferred to Saint-Fargeau-Ponthierry, where larger and more modern premises were built. But it suffered from the 1973 crisis and adapted poorly to newer techniques and markets. It closed permanently in 1982.

Following the discovery of coconut palms in the West Indies by the French, the fruit was introduced into France, probably in the 17th century. Jean Baptiste Du Tertre, missionary and botanist, arrived in Guadeloupe in 1640. In his book « Histoire générale des Antilles habitées par les Français », he writes: "The palm tree [...] is the most beautiful tree, because it is loaded with the greatest number of leaves [...] some of its nuts are as big as the head of a child and all covered with large stringy bark, one-inch thick, the nut which it envelops not quite round, but a bit triangular in shape, its end bearded, with three small, round holes the width of a lens, the shell of this nut is black, hard as horn… ”. A peculiar description for our modern ears!
There are 2 beautiful frigates on this panoramic wallpaper. In France, in the 18th century, the frigates reached their peak, notably with "La Belle Poule" in 1834, larger and more maneuverable than its American counterparts.
In the second half of the 19th century appeared the clippers, designed to convey perishable products as quickly as possible, thanks to large sails and tapered wooden or steel hull. These large merchant ships were very similar to the large war frigates.
