Manufacturer jules desfossé
110,00 €
Designed by drawer Louis Joseph Fuchs in 1862, this panoramic wallpaper was made by Manufacturer Jules Desfossé by means of 1148 engraved wood blocks. During the 19th century, Brazil fascinated the French, and numerous artists travelled there. The illustrations they brought back strongly inspired Joseph Fuchs.
Revitalizing this wonderful Brazil required a long, patient and delicate work from our workshop. But gorgeous murals deserve no less than extensive efforts!

Founded in 1851, the Manufacture Jules Desfossé is one of the most important in France and Europe. In 1853, after Jules Desfossé had joined with Hippolyte Karth, the Manufacture was named Desfossé and Karth. It distinguishes itself by a purchase policy of printing woodblocks and a close collaboration with the artists of the time. Firmly rooted in the Second Empire, and considered the best, this Manufacture offers wall papers with themes in the taste of time, though sometimes nearly decadent.
1862
In Paris, during the first half of the 19th century, due to both increasing urbanization and twofold increase of the population, desire ermerged for recreating gardens at home. Thus, during the Second Empire, wealthy people had keen interest in winter gardens, conservatories and verandas. The famous private mansion of Princess Mathilde, Napoleon III’s cousin, is a renowned example of this trend. This fashion had a major influence on paintwork themes.
A few decades before, orientalism had met a similar influence on decoration, after the success of a painting by Eugène Delacroix : " Femmes d’Alger dans leur appartement " (1833). Panoramic wallpapers with exotic and luxurious foliage patterns –much cheaper than winter gardens, conservatories or verandas- enjoyed phenomenal success.
This panoramic wallpaper illustrates the tropical nature of Brazil with idealized flora and fauna. It shows countless species of animals and plants, and, not only a great many insects and butterflies, but also an infinite number of birds: cockatoos, red ibis, lyrebirds, pelicans, inseparables, herons, pheasants, birds of paradise, etc. All these animals were shown evolving among a luxurious landscape of mangrove trees, banana trees, palm trees, etc. All were drawn with high precision, with the scientific exactness linked to the numerous explorations and botanical discoveries of the time.
Our wallpapers are hung in 3 stages: the preparation of the wall, its pasting, and the hanging. The strips are hung edge to edge and from left to right in the order indicated on the assembly plan supplied with the rolls. To find out more, consult our Hanging instructions page.
