Made by Manufacturer Jules Desfossé in 1861, the panoramic wallpaper, « L’Eden » has been achieved thanks to amazing technical feats. 3642 engraving woodblocks have been needed for the complete artwork, which was composed with 1099 colors. This represented unequalled performance, as by comparison, traditional wallpaper nowadays uses rarely more than 8 colors. Symbolizing the taste of time for exoticism and faraway countries, this mural may have been presented in London at the Universal exhibition of 1862.
Revitalizing such fabulous panoramic wallpaper by means of digital restoration was a patient and meticulous work of fifty hours completed by our workshop.

Founded in 1851, the Jules Desfossé workshop is one of the most important in France and Europe. In 1853, after Jules Desfossé had joined with Hippolyte Karth, the Manufacture was named Desfossé and Karth. It distinguishes itself by a purchase policy of printing woodblocks and a close collaboration with the artists of the time. Firmly rooted in the Second Empire, and considered the best, this Manufacture offers wall papers with themes in the taste of time, though sometimes nearly decadent.

In Paris, during the first half of the 19th century, due to both increasing urbanization and twofold increase of the population, desire ermerged for recreating gardens at home. Thus, during the Second Empire, wealthy people had keen interest in winter gardens, conservatories and verandas. The famous private mansion of Princess Mathilde, Napoleon III’s cousin, is a renowned example of this trend. This fashion had a major influence on paintwork themes.
A few decades before, orientalism had met a similar influence on decoration, after the success of a painting by Eugène Delacroix: " Femmes d’Alger dans leur appartement " (1833). Panoramic wallpapers with exotic and luxurious foliage patterns –much cheaper than winter gardens, conservatories or verandas- enjoyed phenomenal success.
This panoramic wallpaper depicts incredible range of species from the plant kingdom. All are drawn with great distinctness and accuracy, thanks to the growing botanical knowledge of the time. This heaven on earth overlooks seasons and climatic borders as shown by the cohabitation of oaks, cedars, palm trees, umbellifers, yuccas, begonias, viburnum, Virginia creeper, as well as lily of the valley, alpine carnations, scabious from the Caucasus, amaryllis from Peru, hydrangeas from Japan, Indian lotus, European white water lilies, bromeliads from Amazonia, cornflowers, roses, strelitzias, pumpkin flowers, bignonias, etc.
