Manufacturer d'Aubusson
195,00 €
This panoramic is a reproduction of a tapestry from the Manufacture Royale d'Aubusson hung on the walls of the Champs-sur-Marne château (near Paris). Dated from the early 18th century, it adorns one of the corridors of the château and was installed by Louis Cahen d'Anvers, a wealthy banker who became owner of the château in 1895. It is a so-called "greenery" tapestry typical of the 18th century with its very vegetal universe made up of trees and foliage, but also some architectural elements (château, mill, etc.) and birds, notably herons.
The reproduction of this tapestry required a photoshoot at the Champs-sur-Marne château in order to photograph all parts of this tapestry in perfect definition. We then carried out a lengthy digital restoration to revive its colors and the sharpness of its patterns. To evoke the tapestry's grain and woven aspect, we chose to print it on a wallpaper made of natural sisal fibers with a raw and textured appearance.

Under the reign of Louis XIV, Minister Colbert reorganized the kingdom's factories in order to fight against foreign competition. In 1665, he granted Aubusson the title of “Manufacture Royale de Tapisseries” (Royal Tapestry Manufacturer): he did not group the manufacturers within a large factory, but authorized each Aubusson workshop to inscribe this title on the frontispiece of its door.
At the time, the profession and practices are highly regulated to meet quality criteria. On each accepted tapestry is applied a lead with the arms of the king and those of the city. The mention of “Manufacture royale d'Aubusson” must be woven into the work, along with the manufacturer's initials and a blue border. The 18th century, until the French Revolution, was the golden age of the Manufacture, until a decree from the National Assembly put an end to it in 1791.
1700-1750
The Champs-sur-Marne château from which this Aubusson tapestry comes was home to famous guests. The château was notably inhabited and rented by the Marquise de Pompadour (1757-1759) and received visits from the philosophers Voltaire, d'Alembert and Diderot and, later, that of the French writer Marcel Proust. It was finally the location of many films and series such as Dangerous Liaisons, Jefferson in Paris, Colonel Chabert, The count of Monte Cristo, The children of the century, Vatel, Marie-Antoinette ...
Dated from the beginning of the 18th century, this Aubusson tapestry, a reproduction of which we offer, is located in one of the corridors on the first floor of the Champs-sur-Marne château. This corridor is made up of a patchwork of 7 tapestries (including this one) representing typical “vgreenery” subjects such as a forest, flowers and foliage, birds, mountains, a river... but also a hunting scene, architectural elements... As was customary, some were cut out to be adapted to their new location. It is originally woven from wool and silk threads.
Our wallpapers are hung in 3 stages: the preparation of the wall, its pasting, and the hanging. The strips are hung edge to edge and from left to right in the order indicated on the assembly plan supplied with the rolls. To find out more, consult our Hanging instructions page.
