Wallpaper blue Medallions . 1867

This wallpaper was designed and manufactured by the H. Paulet workshop in 1867. It decorates the "Blue Room" on the 1st floor in the Nohant house. George Sand lived in this room the last years of her life (from 1867 to 1876). She has invested a lot in her decoration and was inspired in particular by her grandmother's bedroom. The original wallpaper is blue (this one), we have declined it in sage-green and wedgwood blue.
To bring new life and modernity to this wallpaper, Le Grand Siècle commissioned a photo shoot on the Nohant site. Our workshop then carried out a long and meticulous digital restoration.

This "Medallions" wallpaper was made by the French manufacturer H. Paulet in 1867. On the wallpaper is a stamp stating: "H. Paulet, wallpaper manufacturer, 70 rue basse des remparts, Paris". Unfortunately, we don't have more information about it.

George Sand changed rooms regularly in her Nohant'house (5 times in 60 years). There are often redevelopments in this home, and putting up new wallpaper is almost always at the heart of the change. In 1867, when she returned to Nohant, she moved into the room on the 1st floor on the south side (“the blue room”), formerly reserved for guests. Very invested in her decoration, she then spent her days sewing curtains, bed covers, etc. George Sand obviously liked this room and its wallpaper (see DETAIL), she died there on June 8, 1876.

The original version of this model is blue, which explains the name "blue room" in which it is placed in Nohant. The many wallpapers that decorated the walls of George Sand's house were very often blue. George Sand particularly liked the blue of this “Medallions” model. Here is what she says about it in her diaries: "I covered myself in soft blue dotted with white medallions where little mythological characters dance (...) I will only have sweet and silly ideas there" (diary IV, 15/1/1867) "Excellent night in my new room. I experience a feeling of well-being and extraordinary rest there. This soft color has a noticeable effect on the mind"(Agenda IV, 21/1/1867). She also qualified this wallpaper as "rococo" certainly for its heavy and fashionable antique character, quite characteristic of the style of the Second Empire.
