Located at 19 rue des Carmes in Orléans, an address that still exists today, the Boulard workshop was active from 1810 to 1842. It was a "late" workshop because the golden age of domino papers is dated from the second half of the 18th century. Orleans is one of the main places for the manufacture of decorated papers in France. The city produced great domino manufacturers such as Huquier, Sevestre-Leblond, Letourmi and Perdoux. At the beginning, Anne Boulard was employed by Jean-Baptiste Letourmi, and around 1810, set up on her own, and bought the Jean-Baptiste Letourmi holdings in 1812. She married Michel Rabier, domino manufacturer and paper merchant. The couple grew the business until 1843.

Coming from central and eastern Asia, peony had long been regarded as "the queen of flowers" in China. Introduced in Europe at the end of the 18th century and named “white peony” (it was only known under this color), it had great success at the end of the 19th century, in particular for its beauty and scent. The flower owes its botanical name to Péon, one of the oldest healing gods in Greek mythology. In the Iliad, Hades, the god of the underworld, wounded by an arrow of Heracles, was entrusted to the care of Peon, who healed him with a decoction of peony seeds applied to the wound. Perceived for a long time as a medicinal plant, both in Europe and in Asia, it was considered the absolute remedy for tumors, infections and neurological problems.
The signature of this domino paper, barely visible, suggest the name « Boulard Anne ». The signature corresponds to the early days of the workshop: after an experience into the Letourmi domino manufacturer, Anne created her own workshop rue des Carmes in 1810 and signed "Boulard, Anne" until 1812, when she married Michel Rabier. Consequently, their domino papers are signed "Rabier-Boulard" or "Rabier-Boulard, Michel".
