This wallpaper comes from an unknown manufacturer. We hypothesize that it was perhaps printed by the English factory Lanckacke which settled in the Paris region at the end of the 1760s, financially aided by France, which was then waging a real commercial war against England when it comes to wallpapers.

Interesting facts
Interesting facts

This wallpaper comes from the unrestored private apartments of Mr and Mrs Thierry de Ville d'Avray located on the mezzanine floor of the Hôtel de la Marine (Paris). Built between 1758 and 1772, the Hôtel de la Marine (which took this name after the Revolution) housed the royal furniture storage in which furniture, tapestries, works of art and royal jewelry were then stored, maintained and manufactured for the family and royal residences. Managed by a General Intendant directly appointed by the King of France, it was open to the public under the reign of Louis XVI, like a museum before its time, in order to expose the royal collections and the best of creation. It changed function in the 19th century to house the Ministry of the Navy until 2015. It is now a museum.

This wallpaper from the end of the 18th century is quite representative of the tastes of this century for cheerful and light motifs such as were favored by the Queen Marie-Antoinette who made them particularly fashionable, notably through the development of Indians fabric whose trade was operated by the Compagnie des Indes. This paper was rediscovered during the restoration of the Hôtel de la Marine: very damaged (see photo), it nevertheless retained all its colors and finesse.
