French designers and ornamentalists thus imagined patterns that we still find in our interiors today. The “toile de Jouy” in particular is one of these traditional themes that are still very popular.

Le Grand Siècle brings new life and modernity to the toile de Jouy by digitally restoring authentic wallpapers produced during the Consulat and Empire periods. We therefore offernon-woven wallpapers made in France which will immerse you in the rural settings so typical of toile de Jouy.

The toile de Jouy pattern: all the elegance of French style

The toile de Jouy takes its name from the town of Jouy-en-Josas, located a few kilometers from Paris. It designates a particular pattern of textile decoration invented by Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf during the second half of the 18th century. Also called Indian, the toile de Jouy met with great success from its creation. The factory created by Oberkampf to accommodate the production of canvases even received the title of royal manufacturer under the reign of Louis XVI, in 1783.

The term toile de Jouy has become a generic term which actually designates two large families of motifs: the floral canvas and the narrative canvas. The flower motifs are characterized by their great chromatic richness while the narrative motifs are distinguished by the variety of subjects, sometimes inspired by literature and sometimes by mythology. Over the years, the toile de Jouy was enriched with themes and motifs, its success allowing it to be worked on by renowned painters such as Jean-Baptiste Huet.
