Founded in 1760 (under the reign of Louis XV) by Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf, the Jouy manufacturer became, in the 18th century, one of the most important manufacturers of Indiennes, oriental cotton fabrics with bright colors and floral patterns imported to Europe. It was implanted in Jouy-en-Josas (Yvelines, France) for its proximity to the Versailles court and for its location on the banks of the Bièvre river, whose chemical qualities were suitable to washing canvases. Tapestries, furnishing fabrics, clothing making, the nobles of France and around the world adore this refined canvas. At the beginning of the 19th century, the factory became the third largest in France, employing nearly 1,300 workers and thus allowing France to compete with England on the textile market. After Oberkampf's death in 1815, his son inherited the family business, but faced with increasing competition, the factory eventually closed in 1843.
1790-1800
The Jouy manufacturer regularly welcomed Queen Marie-Antoinette who was particularly fond of these fabrics printed with fresh and rural paterns depicting her life at the Petit Trianon and the Hameau. Louis XVI ennobled Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf by granting him the title of Baron and elevated his company to the rank of “Royal Manufacturer”. Napoleon I and Empress Joséphine also visited the manufacturer. Delighted that it would enable France to compete strongly with the English market, the Emperor awarded the Legion of Honor to Oberkampf in 1806.
For its fabric patterns, the Jouy factory commisioned famous French painters, in particular Jean Baptiste Huet (1745-1811). A follower of the work of Antoine Watteau, he was painter to the King and an expert in painting animals. Generally speaking, the Toiles de Jouy represented genre scenes, mythological or pastoral, with numerous patterns of flowers, animals or characters. In its time, the Toile de Jouy also had an educational purpose in order to transmit historical, literary, philosophical, botanical, animal knowledge, etc. It is therefore considered the “first comic book in history”.
