By rediscovering the decorations preserved by the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris, the National Library of France or the Center for Historic Monuments and thus renewing the view of these works which made up the golden age of wallpaper in France.
All the 18th century decors that we invite you to discover represent old motifs imagined by major manufacturers: these are wallpapers that convey a great concern for aesthetics and beauty.
Between toile de Jouy and floral motifs, 18th century wallpapers enhance your interior by ideally combining tradition and modernity.
Le Grand Siècle chose to highlight the Decorative Arts of the 18th century because from 1770 France enjoyed exceptional influence in its manufacture of wallpaper. French manufacturers at the time surpassed the English ones, long considered the best in the decorative field. 18th century wallpapers produced in France stand out for their more original and sophisticated designs, but also for their more intense and subtle colours, which perfectly convey the decorative spirit so typically French. Thanks to this uniqueness, France became the leading producer of wallpaper in the world and exported its production throughout Europe, Russia and the Americas.
In order to help you discover all the beauty of the Decorative Arts of the 18th century, Le Grand Siècle has carried out meticulous research, digital restoration and creation. Our 18th century wallpapers have been entirely digitally reconstructed in order to create decors in tune with our times and your modern decoration constraints.
Our selection of 18th century wallpapers gives pride of place to floral motifs: poppy, jasmine, camellias and carnations make up this beautiful panel and rub shoulders with timeless motifs such as checkerboard and rural landscapes so characteristic of the Jouy manufacture.
The wallcoverings that we invite you to discover have of course prestigious historical origins. The Japanese Maple in Indigo Blue pearlescent wallpaper was, for example, discovered during the restoration of the Hôtel de la Marine in Paris, formerly occupied by Madame Thierry de Ville d'Avray, wife of the steward of Louis XVI's storage room. You will also find the productions of the Réveillon or Jacquemart and Bénard manufacturers which reflect the taste of the time for the Far East and its patterns imbued with softness and serenity. Our 18th century wallpaper also draws its inspiration from Indian and oriental fabrics that were very popular in Europe at the time. Finally, the 18th century was also marked by the activity of the Jouy manufacturer, famous for its rural settings, its pastoral and genre scenes whose vocation was educational.
