Antique gold leaf wallpapers

Editor of historical motifs, Le Grand Siècle strives to promote the Decorative Arts of past centuries by drawing on the rich collections of the greatest French museums. The brand thus carries out conscientious work of restoration and adaptation of the works to contemporary tastes. A way to bring our heritage back to life.

In order to select our historical mural decors, we explore museums, visit chateaux, writers' homes or even library funds and, to enhance some of these exceptional mural decors and motifs, we have them printed on gold leaf wallpaper. This is particularly the case of the panoramics taken from George Sand’s house in Nohant.

Embellish your home decor with panoramic gold leaf wallpapers

Precious material par excellence, gold naturally enhances the slightest decor. On panoramic wallpapers, gold leaf applied by hand gives the work a singular shine while magnifying each pattern and each contour. In a period or contemporary interior, gold leaf wallpaper is an undeniable guarantee of elegance and luxury.

To put together this collection, Le Grand Siècle went to George Sand's House in Nohant, to discover a private bedroom: that of Aurore, the writer's granddaughter. It was she who chose to decorate the room with Japanese motifs, then very fashionable in France, in the 1880s. The wallpaper thus takes up iconographic elements characteristic of the Japanese style: we see, for example, the Mei flowers, symbols of courage or even cranes, associated with pride and longevity. Designed and manufactured by the Parisian manufacturer Petitjean, this wallpaper was presented at the Universal Exhibition of 1889, it now belongs to the Centre des Monuments Nationaux. It comes back to life today through our collection of gold leaf panoramics.

Gold leaf panoramic wallpaper : artisanal work of excellence

To give a second life to its sublime Japanese mural decors, Le Grand Siècle first carried out a photo shoot in Aurore’s room. Our workshops then completed a long and meticulous digital restoration work. We obtained a precious version printed on gold leaf wallpaper, entirely handmade in France: each gold leaf is in fact applied manually on the non-woven paper before printing.

Before printing the colored patterns, a white underlayer is meticulously applied, giving the patterns a unique lacquered effect and luminosity. Undeniably luxurious and precious, gold leaf wallpaper is obviously fragile: it requires the intervention of a professional for its installation. To discover in detail the sumptuous patterns of these panoramic decors, we invite you to order a sample in A4 format.
